Todd Haley addressed this week's release of wide receiver Will Franklin but was short on specifics.
"He was here and he was working," Haley said. "You’ve got to make these decisions sometimes and they’re not always pleasant. We’re trying to find the right guys for the Kansas City Chiefs. At this time, we didn’t feel this was the direction we wanted to go.
"It’s a little bit of your instinct or gut feeling on some of them. You don’t want to make a mistake but you will. You’ll release players that will potentially go on to great careers. That’s happened over and over. But to me it’s finding the right guys for this team."
Haley didn't say so, but the Chiefs were apparently frustrated with Franklin's inability to master the offensive system. That's the reason he didn't play more last year, when the Chiefs needed help at wide receiver. He also wasn't much of a factor on special teams, something the Chiefs will require from backup receivers other than 36-year-old Bobby Engram.
