The Chiefs agreed to contract terms today with veteran offensive lineman Mike Goff. Goff has some versatility and could wind up starting for the Chiefs at center or right guard.
The 33-year-old Goff played 11 NFL seasons, the first six with Cincinnati and the last five with San Diego. He has been a starter for the past nine seasons.

I'm all for Mike Goff. I live in San Diego and i have watched him play. He is better than most of you think. It's not like we went out and picked the worst linemen out there. He is an upgrade and more importantly a veteran that was part of a winning team (most of the time). He will help in the locker room and on the field. We also gave up about a role of toilet paper to get him. His short contract will be good because 'if or when' we draft another linemen, Goff and Waters could help him out.
As far as you fans that say "I'M DONE WITH THE CHIEFS" good. We don't need to have a crybaby that can't stand by his team through thick and thin. I guess your marriage lives aren't much better are they? Once your wife does something that you don't like, im guessing your done with her too huh? Weird. But back to the subject, JUST LEAVE. Please read this slowly...There is a new GM running the team. There will be a quality backup player at every position, competing with the starter for that job. There will no longer be a complete void of quality backup players if/when an injury or something happens.
A few choice veterans can influence the young players, the culture of the team.
This is all about giving the young guys someone to compete against, surrounding the young players with veterans who love football and know what it takes to be a starting-caliber player in the NFL.

Since when is having "too many" OL a bad thing? Personally I'm thrilled to get a player of his caliber and durability. Goff can play a couple of positions and has another couple of years of decent play left in him. We have to remember that when we brought Roaf in he wasn't exactly a youngster and he still dominated!

There not saying Goff is gonna start, he's here to COMPETE. And guess what, good veterans do NOT wanna give up there jobs to someone just cuz they're young. So whoever we draft or get, if they beat out Goff, guess what, this time around it'll be because HE EARNED IT. WE NEED COMPETITION AT KEY POSITIONS AND WE NEED GOOD VETS ON THE SIDELINES HELPING THEM OUT DURING THE GAMES. Good points! What we've all seen in the past is a good mix of veteran and young players is the winning formula and that's what the Chiefs are doing. Goff still has a good 2-3 years in him which I'm fine with. Draft linemen in the later rounds and have them study under Goff and Waters the next few years. Also, I can't believe so many people are freaking out in March!!! Before we've seen one pass, one tackle, anything from the new look Chiefs. Settle down folks!
Let's see, Waters, Goff, McIntosh, okay 3 30+ year old veterans on the o-line. Am I the ONLY one who remembers what happened when we held onto 3-4 veteran lineman a few years ago without any draft prospects?
Our O-line STILL hasn't recovered from the fatal move NOT to draft offensive lineman. Peterson admitted (for him to admit anything is a big deal) it was one of his biggest mistakes as GM. Albert was a good move, now we need at least one more 1st-2nd round pick-up, and if signing Goff means we don't do this, then it is a bad move, and I WILL forget about this season.
SERIOUSLY, are you all gonna sit there and tell me you don't remember what happened when we failed to draft new offensive lineman several years ago, instead we betted on 30+ year old veterans and that failed miserably.

I see a little of what we are doing. Yes we are signing some older players but it looks like we are signing plyers who can help now, who ARE winners from winning organizations and most importantly, show the young players what it takes to be a winner. Our locker room now has some mature examples to follow.

Well that's it for me, my enthusiasm for this years Chiefs team is done. WHO GIVES A F*** about a scouting report on a THIRTY-THREE years old guy? - Who will be lucky to play 8 games before one of his knees breaks? This is what THE 10th or so 32+ years veteran that Pioli signed that nobody else was interested in? Looks like the youth movement is over, who wants to watch a bunch of cast-off veterans go 8-8? After everything that has happened over the years, especially the last 3 your NOW done with the Chiefs because..they signed a veteran O lineman who was an upgrade over what they had?? You obviously know D**K about football.
I think getting these older, more experienced players is great! I do not believe the youth movement is over, after all we still have our draft picks left, right? Oh, we did trade one, but we got a young QB, sorry.
Now we will have veteran players to show our young, raw players what it takes to win. (I bet these veterans still remember how to compete, whether it be for a playing spot or against another team.)
Looking back now, I don't think Herm Edwards did the whole youth movement thing the right way. He had a few veteran players, but only one or two of those were any good. You need more than a couple good role models for a whole team to watch and mimic.

Having veterans on the team does not prevent the Chiefs from drafting young players to take their spots. Rather, having veterans gives the Chiefs serviceable options at these positions and allows the Chiefs to draft the best available players in the draft instead of reaching on players just because they fill positions of "need" or loading up our roster with dozens of undrafted rookies just to fill holes in our depth.
I am pretty sure Edwards would have begged Petersen for this guy too. Getting the best talent available especially when there is no cost involved it imperative to winning. Then after the draft and camps and a little bit of preseason you take the best 53 guys and keep them. cut the rest. Oh by the way, I seriously doubt Petersen could have gotten this guy. Our big problem with getting free agents wasn't that Petersen could not figure out which ones were worth having, the problem was none would talk to him let alone come here and play in his mess. that is gone now, and after the year we will likely have we will have pick of the litter. It will become clear to the world by the end of this season that this is a much better run organization. With all due respect to Lamar, he lost his edge, Clark clearly loves the Chiefs like Lamar did when he started. We needed that renewed vigor. It will show through the new management and the staff. Go big red.

Expert's Take: Goff is an experienced staring RG who continues to play at a consistent level. Even though he has been a durable player throughout his career, he is starting to decline based on age and skill level. The Chargers' offensive line has been somewhat-inconsistent, although Goff started all 16 games this past season. As a run-blocker, he has decent initial quickness off the line of scrimmage and into blocking patterns. He has a good understanding of angles and body position. He has a tendency to get upright and doesn't always finish, but has good functional play strength. He bends at the waist and isn't fluid changing directions. He isn't a very effective pulling guard and whiffs too often in the open field, when trying to engage smaller, more agile players. As a pass-blocker, he has some quickness in his pass sets with the ability to slide and mirror off short sets. He has above-average quickness with his hands and can reset on targets, but does have limited recovery. He plays with awareness and is best suited in a small area. Goff is an experienced starting guard who still has some fire and demeanor to be a stop-gap starter in the NFL for some teams.
Looks like a bit of an upgrade to our RG from last year...

Expert's Take: Jones is an experienced player with starting experience. He has good size, long arms and adequate athletic skills for the position. He plays with a wide base and has above-average initial quickness off the ball and into blocking patterns. He doesn't always maintain his pad level, but knows how to position and wall off. He is an instinctive player who understands angles and leverage. He doesn't play with a mean streak, but has enough quickness to gain position on the second level. He is somewhat-limited on short pulls and when blocking in space with adequate control. He can bend and slide his feet off short set. He is not real powerful with his hands and displays wide placement on upfield targets, but he does have active hands and can reset on targets. His long arms allow his recovery off hard inside moves. He does get top heavy and will overextend versus quicker inside rushers. Jones isn't always a sound technician and will get sloppy at times. He handles power-rushers better than speed on the inside. He can drop his hips and anchor. He is best suited as a backup offensive lineman in the NFL.
Is a good player. I have no idea why the Chargers let him go. Maybe because they want to go younger too? Or maybe they found a better replacement and didn't want to pay him that much to be a backup, i dont know. But i do live in San Diego and i know he is a good OL. We needed help on the OL and he sure will be a good addition.
Finally the chiefs are starting to work on their O-line...so matt cassel with have some pretection back in the pocket...hopefully they get more O-line to help out branden albert.

I am sure glad to see us pick up an OL. I was wondering why we had not, seems like a lot of guys are usually available each year. I think Goff is a good addition. This is an area of need, and at a minumum he will help create some compitetion.

I read several articles on this guy and he sounds like he is/was pretty legit. He is getting older, but I am guessing he can make a good, solid impact for another year or two. and thanks for the link, it was a good starting point to urge me to look further. I checked out highlights on nfl.com, specifically the chief-charger game that was 21-20. Goff was looking pretty good in most of them. He is older but it is exciting to have a guy like this for the next two years. Solid!
