Pioli very rarely signed any big-name FAs up here in NE (Adaleus Thomas was the only big-name FA I can think of). His approach is much more involved than throwing $40M/$20M guaranteed for 5-years at a a free agent who is on Yahoo's top 100 FAs who handcuffs you financially down the road.
I like what they're doing, and it looks a lot like what he did up here in NE. They have options at QB now, and put themselves in position to grab the best defensive player in the draft - and have Vrable to mentor him.
Cassel is on the books for 1-year only at $14.5M - he's going to have to earn a long-term deal this year. (And Cassel DOES have a very good arm - as good or better than Brady's - and Cassel can run).
I'm sure Pioli will sign more players, they probably just won't be the household names many were hoping for. And there's always the draft. Give him a chance - he's done it before, he didn't get dumb since taking this job. Offense wins games - he'll beef up the o-line with a couple more additions, and maybe pull an old WR off the scrap heap for short money - there's plenty of these still out there.

1. Herm didn't draft well last year. Last year's draft gave us Albert, Flowers, Carr, and a lot of trash/spare parts. Less than one in four picks will be starting next year.

2. We didn't sign cheap free agents last year. We overpaid for the likes of Devard Darling and Demorrio Williams. We also (idiotically) traded or cut our defensive vets in Wilkerson, JA, and Napo Harris.

3. Paying a QB is a whole lot different than paying a center. Anyway, we're not going to pay Cassel $14M this year. He's going to sign a long-term contract before the season begins. $8M (or 6% of your cap) IS too much for a center.

4. Cassel does have a strong arm. Look at his highlights from the Pats/Jets game last year. He's bigger and more accurate as well. He won 11 games last year. Thipgen won 1. This is a no-brainer.

By the way, I like Thigpen. But his second half fades, relatively small height, and inaccuracy made the powers that be decide he isn't a franchise guy. He'll be a valuable player for us, but you shouldn't delude yourself into thinking he was better than he was.

Having Cassel under center will help us win a whole lot more games than Brown and Olshansky. Paying those two guys (neither of whom is top-10 at their position) 10% of our cap would be idiotic. The Rams will be floundering for the next decade because of their moves these past couple offseasons (overpaying for centers and kickers while ignoring their QB and front seven positions). We'll be successful because we found value FAs and drafted well.

The Steelers and the Pats are our template. Not the Rams and Cowboys.

Pioli's looking to sign cheap FAs, not guys who are going to be overpaid and mediocre (like Bart Scott, Jonathan Vilma, Haynesworth, Olshansky, Coles, Canty, Jason Brown, etc.). Would I have wanted these guys? Sure. Were they worth their bloated contracts? Nope.

We're not building another overpaid, 8-8, 1st round playoff loser. Neither are we relying on the draft for lockeroom leadership. We're getting some select FAs to mentor the kids and drafting well. Pioli and Haley know that were not a player away. We're not ten players away. It'll take a couple years, but a mix of cheap FAs and good drafts will get us back on top.

We already got a QBOTF and our defensive field marshal. We have a full month and a half until the draft to get some more FAs. Unlike the previous regime, these guys know what they're doing.

Vilma can't play ILB in a 3-4. His stint with the Jets proves that pretty definitively.

Brown is getting paid $8M a year as a center. I like Brown, and would like him on the team, but that's massively overpaying.

As for Bart Scott, name a Ravens player who accomplished anything on a new team. I can think of about a dozen failures. Plus, we had no chance at getting him without beating the Jets offer. He wanted to play with Rex Ryan in a big market.

Olshansky is one that bugs me, I admit.

Don't kid yourself. Cassel is bigger and more accurate than Thigpen. I like Thgpen, and I think we'll see a decent amount of him this season as a slot WR and gadget guy, but it's crazy to say he's Cassel's equal.

The need a guy on the defense to be a field marshal of the 3-4, and to get orders from the headset. Vrabel is that guy, until we groom someone else.

Look, if we'd signed all the guys I listed and used our entire cap, we still wouldn't win a playoff game next year. This team was stripped of most of its talent over the past three years. It isn't going to be a one-year fix.

Trust me, Pioli's going to sign bargain FAs over the next five weeks ad then draft well. That will help us in the long run a whole lot more than overpaying for mediocre guys.

I see this guy pull up when another chief has the opponent in his grasp. McGraw could of come in there and cleaned this guys clock. he pulls up. to me, that says alot about a football player. this guy sucks. there's nothing that can be said otherwise. lot of you people are ksu fans. that's the draw.

I was there at the game in San Diego last season. McGraw was laying wood left and right. Him and Pollard were making plays against the pass and the run.

Not only is the guy a decent, experienced backup safety. But he's also our BEST special teams player outside of our MVP(most valuable punter). He's our best kick coverage guy by far, and he's Colquitt's personal protector. Which MIGHT have something to do with the fact that Colquitt has an unusually low percentage of blocked punts.

I agree, I'm glad they brought back McGraw because he is a great Special teamer and I think by now everybody has realized how big special teams is... Good choice to keep him around... I would like to see us bring in Keith Davis too, that would lay the foundation for a solid special teams...
