Haley: There's competition for QB job

Chiefs coach Todd Haley just finished speaking with the local media regarding the weekend trade that brought quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel from New England.

Among Haley's most interesting comments: Cassel won't be handed the starting job and Tyler Thigpen will have the chance to win it.

"I don’t know that you can say the quarterback position is secure," Haley said. "I think we’ve got another guy to come in and compete for the starting quarterback position.

"I just got off he phone with Tyler. I told him I’m a very selfish coach. I think that’s evident by Arizona and what we did. We’re going to play the guys that give us the best chance to win."

It'll make us Stronger

I like hearing that our Head Coach wants competition for the QB spot. I think both guys will respond to the challenge, and it sends a message to the entire team. I just want two healthy QBs all year.

I noticed a disturbing trend with Tyler Thigpen last year. He seemed to play better early in games but would fade in the 3rd and 4th quarters. He did not finish the season well either. Don't get me wrong, I like Tyler. He seems like sort of a novelty player to whom teams eventually adjust...a little like Doug Flutie. Like Flutie, he is fun to watch. I just don't see him as a permanent solution. He could really be a spark as a second stringer if Cassel goes down. Some plays could be designed for him as well just for a change of pace. Cassel is a more classic QB that can play well both under center and in the shotgun. Tyler has never played well under center and does not throw nearly as well from the pocket. Cassel is 3 inches taller and can run and throw on the run too. Cassel orchestrated game winning drives and won his last 5 games. His second half QB rating was higher than the first. He seemed to get better as the season progressed in an effort to make the playoffs. Tyler has not played with much pressure because the Chiefs were far out of contention. I don't know what Haley is talking about unless he's just playing politics. See Huard's QB competition with Brodie. That's my take. KR

The way Tyler finished games last year was related to the lousy play calling, Chan is not used to calling a spread offense, he would come in with an early game plan but he would lose it at the end, thats where Haley comes in, he will help Chan with his plan of attack for the whole game and not just the first half. Haley likes the west coast/spread type of offense which is good for Cassel and Tyler.

I agree with you....but I wonder how much of the Chiefs being flat in the second half last year was Tyler's fault, the other teams making adjustments, or the lousy play calling.

I think too often the lack of 1st downs and the defense being on the field too long in the 2nd half was their un-doing. Again, was it the players not making plays, the other teams 2nd half adjustments, or the coaches sitting on a lead too soon?

Vonnie Holliday

When you're looking to add leadership on the defensive side of the football why not bring back Vonnie Holliday? He played well as a team captain for the Dolphins. He's been an integral part of the kind of turn around that we're looking for here. He led their D-line in tackles. We need veteran leadership to show us how to win. Vrabel and Holliday could show these talented-but young players how to develop habits of successful NFL players, and winners. We need the atmosphere of winning around us, you can't put a pricetag on being around those who have been good, and won.

Ca Chief - Vonnie Holliday was not that great as a Chief, and I'm sure they had good reason to let him go from Miami. How about Jason Taylor though? Something to ponder.

I think Taylor would cost too much. We can't fill in every position that we need to upgrade in one year and I'm not saying he'd lead us to the promiseland. We could get Holliday at a low cost and provide leadership to a young D-Line with a high character guy that played well the last 4 years with Miami. We have cap space and he would fill in at DE and be an upgrade on the field-but more so in the locker room and in the mentoring of a young defense. Should not be a stretch for our GM to call Miami to get the info on what Holiday's got to offer a young team looking to turn things around.

-- He was let go from Miami because of a 1.5 million dollar roster bonus he was due tomorrow. He would have counted 5.5 mil against the cap.

and you will hear Haley talk about competition for the starting QB spot, but listen to Cassel and he is talking about it being "his team" and "he's the guy." I say Cassel gets the starting nod and Haley is just saying that to stop any type of conflict.

Yeah right Cassel isn't automatically the starting QB.... and Carl Peterson isn't still the chiefs GM and Santa isn't necessarily not real.

Just because Cassel had a tender with New England doesn't mean that's what were paying him. I'm sure Pioli, Cassel and his agent had an understanding of what a contract might be worth if the trade was made. I would think they would tear up the tender offer and renegotiate a new contact.

Play the better QB

I don't care who makes the most money. You play the guy who gives us the best chance to win. We learned this lesson once with Grbac and Gannon.

Actually we didn't learn anything of the kind.. Grbac was the better QB and always will be.. Gannon only had more wins and publicity because he was on the better team, don't believe me check the records.. During the same years Grbac was in KC and Gannon in Oak the two players passing records were almost identical and Grbac a little better in some areas. Only area where there was any real difference was running the ball which Gannon was best at hands down between the two..

What we learned was Gannon went to a team with great WR's, RB's, Defense and an awesome Offensive line.. Grbac stayed in KC with below average WR's, RB's, Defense and a shaky O-Line.. Gannon went to playoffs and superbowls because he had a good team around him and a great Defense.. Grbac had a sucky team around him and poor defense so he went nowhere..

Grbac went to Baltimore and they suddenly lost their RB through injury for the year and was on like a 2nd or 3rd string RB and the WR's and offensive line sucked big time.

So we learned nothing except the fact that an adequate QB can look great when surrounded by the right people and a good QB can look terrible if surrounded by a sucky team.

While the two might be close statisically, Rich never really got a chance to start until he went to Oakland. He responded by going to the Pro Bowl 4 times, won an AFC Championship, and the MVP award in 2002.

Grbac was mediocre at best and did nothing to inspire the players around him. Remember him calling out Tony Gonzalez publicly for dropping passes? The Chiefs actually had the 14th ranked defense and 4th ranked rushing offense in 1999 and couldn't make the playoffs.

The only better teams the Chiefs have ever had were in 1969 and 1971. They had a 5 game winning streak going into the playoffs and a QB with a hot hand. Instead they started Grbac because of Marty's dumb policy of players not losing their job to injury.

Gannon never won a Super Bowl. The Raiders lost to Tampa the only time he went...but he went which is more than we can say for all the Chiefs QB's since Lenny Dawson.

I was for Grbac over Gannon. And I was wrong. Gannon was just a winner. Grbac was alright, but he didn't have 'it'.

I want to see which of our guys does have it, and hope Haley picks the right leader.

The Chiefs will give Cassel an extension, but can they pay him that much money if Thigpen wins the QB battle? Leinart is earning a pretty penny and that didn't stop Warner from stealing the show.

i know people are giving thigpen the benefit of the doubt becase his age and experience but he was given an entire season of chances and he dropped the ball. In 12 starts last season he only managed to reel in 2 wins in comparison to cassel's 11. To me the chiefs have no choice but to start cassel or endure another sub par season

thiggy is going to be the chiefs answer to the wildcat next year .. he'll get on the field quite often and complement cassell .. the two can work together. there's a reason why haley complimented thiggy today .. it's because he realizes he has a great athlete there who can be an added weapon. thiggy is the man.
