Facts about the coaching search and, heck, everything going on at Chiefs headquarters these days has been kept quiet.
Now that the Super Bowl is over, training camp is a little less than six months away. And heaven only knows how long it'll be before the Chiefs hire a coach (Days? Weeks? Going coach-free in 2009?).
So to pass the time, here are some nice rumors to get us through the dead period.
- The Matt Cassel train could be stopping in Kansas City, after all. The Boston Herald suggests that the Chiefs could be Cassel's top suitor and that it makes sense he could further his career at Arrowhead Stadium.
Blogger's note: We wrote a little something last week about how the Chiefs should at least consider trading their top draft pick for Cassel, who will be cheaper, more experienced and more ready than any quarterback they'd pick in the draft.
- Are the Chiefs so certain that Todd Haley is their guy that other candidates aren't bothering to interview? That's what the Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday, saying that Kansas City is having trouble complying with the Rooney Rule because many minority coaches won't waste their time on a Chiefs interview because Haley is the presumed frontrunner.
Haley is still downplaying his involvement in the Chiefs discussion, saying he loves Arizona and Ken Whisenhunt and everything about the Cardinals organization. Then again, according to the Sun-Times: "Even the custom pool that Haley had installed last offseason at his Scottsdale home won't prevent him from packing up and heading to Kansas City. Head coaching jobs don't open often, and the Hunt family is considered good ownership."
Blogger's note: For the record, Herm Edwards' consideration for retaining his job will not satisfy the Chiefs' Rooney Rule requirements. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told me last week that teams with head coach openings have to interview an outside minority candidate to comply with league rules.
- ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported yesterday that Haley, while technically not allowed last week to interview with the Chiefs, spent time on the phone trying to assemble a staff.
