Napoleon Harris joined the Chiefs last year as a high-priced free agent and their starting middle linebacker.

Demorrio Williams joined the Chiefs this year as their highest profile free agent addition and someone to challenge Harris for a starting spot.

Pat Thomas joined the Chiefs last year after 31 teams passed on him and he cleared waivers.

But Thomas, for now at least, is the Chiefs’ starting middle linebacker. The Chiefs had been rotating Harris and Thomas, but Thomas received all of the first-team snaps Tuesday afternoon, the only full-team practice of the day.

The Chiefs were disappointed in Harris even though he led the team in tackles. They brought in Williams and indicated Williams might start at one outside linebacking position with Donnie Edwards moving into the middle.

But Williams has yet to play with the starters. Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham screamed at Williams when the player didn’t perform in a drill as Cunningham wished. That, combined with the promotion of Thomas into the lineup, calls into question whether the Chiefs are unhappy with Williams.

Derrick Johnson, the other starting linebacker, sat out Monday’s practices with leg cramps. Undrafted rookie LeRue Rumph and not Williams started in his place.
