ESPN hires Herm Edwards

Former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards is joining ESPN as a NFL studio analyst, the network announced today.

Edwards will appear on NFL Live, SportsCenter, ESPNEWS and other programs throughout the year in addition to contributing analysis on ESPN Radio and other platforms. He is scheduled to start in mid February.

“Herm is well-liked and highly respected throughout the league, and his insights and opinions as a former coach will make a tremendous addition to our year-round NFL coverage,” said Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president, production.

Edwards, who worked a brief stint at ESPN during the 2008 NFL offseason as a guest analyst, added: "I'm excited about the opportunity to join the ESPN team and offer my insight as a former player and head coach. I'm going to be truthful with my opinions on all the issues that take place on and off the field of play."

He spent so much time giving interviews and doing commercials his first two years with the Chiefs, this doesn't surpise me, that he decided to go full time. I guess he did cut back on his precious TV time last year in order to pretend to want to save his job....

Herm generally puts his best into what he does. Herm expects professionalism from himself and others. These qualities are why Herm is loved within the league. Herm may not be the most brilliant defensive analyst, the best motivator or the most creative and insightful game manager, but Herm does win and (unfortunately) lose with character. We all can and do fail. Yes, Herm failed KC in the win/lose column. We all hate that. But Herm's above mentioned stand-out qualities were not sufficient strengths to overcome Peterson's ego-dulled personnel insight, LJ's self-destructive, ego-manical, compulsive disorders, or the many injuries suffered as a squad. I supported Herm's hiring from the pool that was available then; however, I also support that it is time to move on. Herm had his opportunities to prove himself in KC, unfortunately he was more loyal to King Carl than to his own insight, his Owner, his team, and his fan base. Herm's insight knew what was best for this team. I respect Herm's insight for seeing LJ as the "actor" he is and for still going the extra mile... trying to foster a field soldier's sense of respectability within LJ -- it just never took. I respect Herm's insight to know Allen was the one they didn't want to lose. I do think Herm could have been stronger against Carl and stood his ground more and petitioned Clark to keep Allen and ditch LJ. Yes, it would have meant forcing the issues, playing smash mouth ball, bucking the chain of command status quo for establishment of personal beliefs-- but Carl was on his way out, anyway, and Herm could have made his own case for greatness had he been able to stand up for his beliefs and player insight. Herm had his shot at greatness in KC. Herm had the insight, he just wasn't prepared to manifest it. He missed it....we missed it. Herm at ESPN and KC with Pioli now both have another opportunity to grow great things from the compost of a rotting dictatorship.

great, so now the entire nation gets to listen to this moron babble, and not make any sense.

Now I WON'T be watching ESPN anymore. Guess I have to listen to the homers over on NFL Network, but at least it's a viable alternative.

Someone at ESPN should lose their job for this hire.

Herm, please retire, and get as far away from the game of football as you can. You're not any good at coaching, you weren't a great player, and the game has passed you by. The NFL doesn't want you near it's sport.

Go retire, see the world, raise your family, and leave football well enough alone. The fans, the players, and all the teams (who are praying you never interview for another head coaching job, and convince anyone to hire you) will be just fine without you around.

No, they probably would have won more than 4 games. How many games would the Chiefs have won with someone besides Brodie Croyle starting at QB? How many games would they have won if the coach(es) didn't think that 6 minutes left in the game was time to sit on a lead? This was a young team, but Herm's in-game decisions cost them at least 4 wins that young players need to build confidence and move on to the next level. Losing 26 games in two seasons does not build anything.
