I agree with the blog post which preceded me. The defense is now facing a major overhaul and what kind of staff is going to be formed on one-year contracts? Why would Herm stay if he knows Cowher is probably coming in 2010? I think Herm is canned and Gailey is named interim HC for a year. That, of course, doesn't solve the building of the staff, but it makes a little more sense. Damn. We can't catch a break. Cowher's daughter is entering her senior year of high school. That's why he's waiting one year. Come on Bill!!!! Fly back to Carolina every Monday to visit until the season is over. I respect a guy deciding he spent too many years away from home...but this is killing me. We're in the ultimate Limbo Land.

I have to say that I have always been and have remained to this day a Gunther fan. However, with the talent this man has had over the last couple of years to coach, the only players I see that have improved is our db's. I think Brandon Flowers is a stud and will be in the pro-bowl next year. How many sacks did we have this year? Yikes.. Maybe I don't wanna know or remember. Sorry Gun, It is time for some new blood on the defensive side of the ball.. Good luck with the lions.

When David Gibbs interviewed with the Houston Texans for a lateral move, it might have raised some eyebrows, but it didn't necessarily signify anything regarding the Chiefs' decision to fire or retain Herm Edwards. The opportunity, which it appears he'll take, affords Gibbs the chance to reunite with his father, assistant head coach Alex Gibbs; plus, the interview came prior to Pioli's arrival, at a time when uncertainty over job security was perhaps at its greatest for Chiefs coaches.

Soon Mike Priefer may be making a lateral move of his own, as he appears close to being named the new special teams coach of the Broncos. Priefer's departure wouldn't necessarily foretell Herm's firing either, as his units ranked at the bottom of the league in most categories (although he wasn't aided by having to work with guys like Novak and Savage, not to mention a revolving door of tacklers and blockers).

But now Adam Schefter is reporting that Gunther Cunningham will interview in Detroit for a position on Jim Schwartz's staff (note to Jim: don't make it "defensive coordinator"). This move would seem to ring some alarm bells. Not because his departure would hurt the Chiefs, because it wouldn't, but because it would necessitate a near complete overhaul of the defensive staff (come on Krumrie, some CFL team must be interviewing), and that would indicate that the Chiefs are moving in one of two very different directions.

One direction they could be going, we'll call this the right direction, is to fire Herm Edwards and his entire staff. These early defections (or deletions) would merely signify the first of many; the assistants are allowed to interview when opportunities arise, while at the same time the Chiefs maintain the image of doing their due diligence as far as fairly analysing Herm's performance.

The other direction the Chiefs could be going is much more complicated. Suppose Pioli decides that Herm Edwards is fit to remain as head coach (hey, don't ask me how he concludes this - maybe he's drunk?). If this is the case, the Chiefs suddenly find themselves with a defensive staff needing a new coordinator, a new linebackers coach, and a new defensive backs coach. Nobody would argue that the Chiefs' defense needs an overhaul, and nobody would argue that the defensive staff needs an overhaul. But if the Chiefs retain Herm, how do they rebuild this defensive staff? Who would want to come to Kansas City under a one-year contract to try to rebuild a defense that ranked 31st in yards allowed, 29th in points allowed, and sacked the quarterback exactly ten times last season? Of course, the Chiefs could always extend Herm Edwards' contract, but I'm not sure if even Pioli's reputation can weather that hit.

All voices coming out of Arrowhead are sending the message that the decision on Herm has yet to be made. But these coaching developments (which were permitted by the decision makers) are pushing the decision makers into a tough position: retain Herm Edwards and give him more time; retain Herm Edwards and try to fill out a lame duck coaching staff for a lame duck coach; or fire Herm Edwards. All signs point to the last option; it's the only decision that makes sense. Now we just have to wait to hear that it's been made.

Gunther was once one of the masters of the Chiefs defence. That time has come and gone. We all got our hopes up when we heard he was coming back as a Chief. But times have changed in the NFL. Gunther's defencive plans don't work like they use to. I think Gunther will be known as one of the great defencive coaches in Chiefs history. But that is what he needs to be now is Chiefs history. I will always remember the great days he had with D. Thomas and N. Smith. I wish him luck where ever he goes and what ever he does but please bring in some new blood for our defence.

I watch team after team of no-name players making sacks, Philly almost matches our season total in each game. In the NFL, it's all about scheme and obviously Guns doesn't have the scheme any more. It's time to get some fresh blood in Arrowhead.
