If there's one thing I have no patience for, it's those suggestions that the Chiefs need to lose the rest of their games so as not to ruin their precious draft position.

If the draft was a science, I'd buy that argument. By all means, lose out, hope Detroit can win a couple of games and then the Chiefs would get the best player in the 2009 draft class, guaranteed.

The draft is not a science. It's an art. Good artists can get as good a player with the seventh pick as they can with the second. The Chiefs just need to be better artists. The Steelers are always good artists. Pittsburgh will have a lousy draft spot next year and I can't tell you who it will pick. But I can tell you he will be a productive player.

There are benefits from winning football games that go beyond the standings and getting into the playoffs. The Chiefs have won twice in their last 21 games. That stench permeates in a locker room full of those most susceptible: young players. These guys need to know pro football isn't just about an inevitable beating on Sunday afternoon.

If the Chiefs can win just two of their remaining games, giving them three victories in the last five, maybe they'll start figuring that out. The benefits of that far outweigh a top three draft spot.
