I spent almost an hour with Gunther Cunningham on Monday and here are some excerpts from our discussion that didn't make it into the story on the Chiefs defensive coordinator that ran in the Kansas City Star and on Kansascity.com:

---On all of the injuries that depleted his defensive line: "I’m going to chapel this week for the first time I think in 28 years. Somebody’s out to get me."

---On having to show uncharacteristic patience with the many young players: "The nurturing of these players, it’s such a fine line. Maybe I’m doing it backwards. Maybe I should go in there and raise Holy Hell and tear the building down like I’ve done in the past and I’m good at."

---On the Jared Allen trade and the players the Chiefs acquired because of it: "I’ve said to Clark Hunt that 10 years from now, this will be the trade that made it all happen."

---On being upset that the Bills were throwing so late in last week's game: "I’m not about to give up coaching football because I’ve got a few things to do before I retire."

---Cunningham said that he's so dialed in to what he's doing of late that one defensive assistant coach, Mike Ketchum, has to order his dinner every night. Another, David Gibbs, has to remind him to eat it. Cunningham's wife Rene makes a nightly call to Gibbs to see whether Cunningham has indeed eaten it.
