Now we know why the San Diego Chargers could be headed for Los Angeles.

The Chargers, still 600 tickets short of a sellout by 1 p.m. today, received a 24-hour extension from the NFL in an effort to lift the local television blackout of Sunday's season opener against Carolina.

It's one thing for a team like the Chiefs, coming off a 4-12 season to be hustling to sell out 77,000-seat Arrowhead.

But the Chargers are coming off two straight AFC West titles and an appearance in the AFC Championship Game.

San Diego was granted the extension to 1 p.m. today because of the Labor Day holiday and the shortened business week.

There's little question the Fox affiliate in San Diego will buy out the remaining seats because this is one of just two Chargers games it can televise this season.

“We’re doing everything we can to get the word out that we still have tickets for sale. We think that a lot of fans just don’t realize we still have tickets available,” said Chief Operating Officer Jim Steeg. “Our streak of 30 consecutive regular season and postseason sellouts is definitely in jeopardy.”
