Former Chiefs quarterback Trent Green will start for the St. Louis Rams against his former team in Thursday night's exhibition game at Arrowhead Stadium.

Rams coach Scott Linehan made the announcement after practice on Tuesday.

“Right now, my plan is to actually start Trent so that he can get prepared for a game as if he were the starter, which obviously means not planning on playing Marc (Bulger)," Linehan said. "Marc has a lot of snaps in preseason; a lot more than he’s had at this point. Felt really comfortable with his 45 or whatever, 42 snaps I guess he had last week. Trent has really had limited work and I think could use some time out there on the field.”

Green, 38, hasn't seen much preseason action with the Rams, whom he joined as a free agent after one season in Miami. He played one series (six plays) against Tennessee, followed by half of one series (five plays) against San Diego. He did not play in the Rams’ last preseason game against Baltimore. Green has completed three of eight passes for 51 yards and has been sacked once.

"This gives him a chance in a game to go out and find his rhythm," Linehan said. "So he's not going in the season cold without reps if we ever called upon him.
"You can't assume that just because he's a vet that knows the system, that he can just go out there and turn it on, although I would bet on him more than a lot of guys."

Green spent 2001-06 with the Chiefs, and threw for 21,459 yards and 118 touchdowns, second in club history to Len Dawson’s 28,507 yards and 237 TDs; and his 4,591 yards in 2004 was a club record. Green also passed for 300 yards in 24 games, another club record.
However, he suffered a serious concussion in the 2006 season opener that sidelined him for half the season, and after that season, the Chiefs traded him to Miami.

Green started five games with the Dolphins in 2007 before suffering a season-ending concussion and was released by the club at the end of the season. He completed 85 of 141 passes for 987 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions at Miami.
Green then returned to St. Louis, where he grew up and played for the Rams during 1999-2000 before coming to Kansas City.
The Rams currently have four quarterbacks on their roster. Besides Bulger and Green, journeyman Brock Berlin and former Tampa Bay starter Bruce Gradkowski are in camp and have been battling for the No. 3 spot.
This will be Green’s second appearance in Kansas City since leaving the Chiefs. He started for Miami last preseason at Arrowhead, completing four of seven passes for 41 yards.
