The aura of Larry Johnson might remain for some time around the Chiefs practice facility but his physical presence was wiped clean by the time the media was allowed into the locker room at mid day.
The nameplate above his locker had been removed. His locker was empty other than three white towels neatly folded and stacked and a few clothes hangars.
Predictably, reaction from players was muted. No doubt they were mindful of the words that sent Johnson on his path out of town.
A sampling of the comments:
Matt Cassel: "It’s one of those things we’ll have to deal with as a team. The coach made the decision to go in another direction. Hopefully, these younger guys (Kolby Smith and Jamaal Charles) will step up for us."
Kolby Smith: "He will be missed. He was more than just a teammate. It’s unfortunate what took place, what happened today. Now we’ve got to move on. Jamaal (Charles), Dantrell (Savage) and I have to move forward and continue helping this team win a game."
Mike Vrabel: "Apparently he wasn’t fitting into the plans of the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s been the message since Scott (Pioli) and Todd (Haley started) their time here. They want guys that are going to fit into what they want to do and their plans and try to develop and build a team.’’

Too bad Vrabel isn't a little younger. He knows what it takes to win, obviously he has won in N.E., and it seems as though Pioli and Haley have a plan that's not too hard to see. Just if they could get some talent to go with it. I guess the jury is still out.
