Chiefs claim WR Chris Chambers and some roster stuff

It isn't pretty, but there is some hope yet. For all my complaining, Niswanger hasn't completely bitten the big one at center. The Redskins game was a good example; Haynesworth got in once or twice, but most of the pressure came from the outside. The Chiefs can go a LONG way towards resolving their line issues by repeating what Jacksonville did this year and pick up LT/RT with their first two picks. As has been said, good offensive linemen just don't hit the waiver wire. Move Albert back to guard and put Goff and Smith on a rotation to help keep people fresh.

That does chew up our high picks, but is necessary unless they think Albert will beat the sophomore slump. In that case, a RT at the beginning of the 2nd and a RG with the Gonzalez pick should do it, with Eric Berry in the first to solidify our secondary.

Our running back situation is still precarious, but Smith/Charles is a better two-back set than what some other teams are currently going with (i.e. Seattle, Cleveland, Green Bay) . Plus, capable running backs can be found in the 3rd/4th round. That really just comes down to the quality of your offensive line. Oh, and Johnson should never play another down in red and gold.

For receivers and tight ends, we're still looking a bit thin. I think Ryan has shown enough that we don't need to go looking for a 'stud', unless we can land Owen Daniels on the cheap while he comes off of his injury. We should be able to find a burner in the late second/early third round to compliment Bowe, or we could throw some more money around in free agency. Between Vincent Jackson, Brandon Marshall and Miles Austin, I suspect one of them will hit the market and I hope it's Austin. Marshall, for all his talent, would not be my preference.

And if the pieces at RB/WR don't work out like I said, a vastly improved offensive line and solid defense should give us at least something to cheer about next year, and 2011 would leave us just looking for the last 2-3 pieces to make a serious run in the playoffs.

Granted, that also requires the Cassel experiment to pay off. And maybe he's no Manning or Brady, but I have to say I like his moxie and another second or two in the pocket should help improve his play considerably.

Yeah, there's a lot of work left, but I wanted to point out we're closer than some may think. Give it another year before we start with the torches and pitchforks.

Face it, gang. Vermeil and Peterson let us get long in the tooth and Edwards wanted to throw the baby out with the bath water. Peterson should have traded malcontent and used-up Johnson and kept Allen, and I'm going to leave it there instead of putting out the three years of drafting/free agency that I lined out last month. It makes me cry and you don't want that.

There is some serious hope, though, against all odds. Our secondary, while not great isn't bad. So unless we grab Eric Berry (who is already sounding to be 'can't miss'), we should be okay there. Not great, but okay.

Our defensive line needs only a big-bodied nose tackle to complete the picture, and don't think Pioli won't make a run at free agent Vince Wilfork - and we'll have the cap room to throw plenty of money his way. Jackson/Wilfork/Dorsey with Edwards and Magee rotating isn't anything to sneeze at.

For linebackers, we need a bit more help here but I like what I've seen out of Vrabel, Mays and especially Hali. I know we'd all give Lefty for the chance to pair Jared Allen up with Hali at OLB, but we're not too bad here, either. It'll be even better if Johnson can start living up to his draft hype.

What else is available in the middle of the season other than players that have been let go from other teams??? Should they just stand pat with the 53 they got or go ahead and bring someone in for a try? Whats the point of doing nothing.

People have to complain about something. I agree its better than sitting around doing nothing but to some people its not enough.

He's right...er...I'm right. Millions under the cap, even before the 2009 draft and we're signing other teams rejects. Millions under the cap during free agency and we're signing rejects. The Chargers aren't so good and so deep that they can afford to release good players. This is just a band-aid over a gushing wound. Can't wait to see Chambers win some games for us.

I guess I wasn't nearly as clear as I needed to be for you. I'm not saying that the Chiefs have a lot of choices now. My point is they shouldn't be in this position. They should have made moves when there were GOOD players available. They chose to sit on their millions while most teams were making good choices. It is too late for the Chiefs to salvage this season and Chambers won't be a part of the team next year. If you believe Chambers will make a difference, good for you. I think his contribution will be very much like Wade's contribution. If Piloi and Haley are such genius', they should have known who was and would be available AND GOT THEM.

My problem was you being a negative nancy, but I agree the Chiefs did not make a big enough splash in the off season and I think they realize now their mistakes (at least I hope they do). I'm not putting any money down that Chambers will be the savior of the team, but he surely can't hurt us at all with how bad KC is. Thats all.

So the thing that would make Pioli and Haley geniuses would be for them to invent a time machine and go back to the offseason? We need to get over it. Pioli was hired late and Haley was hired even later, lets give them a complete offseason before saying they are complete junk. I like what they are doing during the season, they realize our team needs help, and they are trying to do it. How many of the players that we've cut have been picked up? We are 1-6, not going to get a whole lot worse, so let's try to bring in players that might help. If they dont, we cut them after the season and we arent out anything. Lets hold judgement until the beginning of next season. Right now there is nothing we can do about the past offseason.

Look Scott Pioli aka CentralKansas. You screwed up in the offseason. Positioning the Chiefs for success will grade out an F- at this point. We would have been more competitive with Tony Gonzales. We would have been more competitive with Pollard. You waisted time and money on washed up bums like Zack Thomas and Monty Biesel. You believed in Larry Johnson when he has averaged 2.7 yards a carry. You allowed McGraw and Brown to start as safeties. I dont even understand the Derrick Johnson deal. I do know that he is an underachiever but did Zach Thomas deserve a starting roster spot over DJ......YOU MADE A Horrible mistake with Matt Cassell and you traded a superior quaterback who had the same or better numbers away to the Dolphins. Matt had way more talent in New England than Tyler Thigpen had here but there stats are almost even last year.
I am not saying that we should be 7-0. I am saying that you tanked it. You made some pretty trashy decisions...I don't think you are looking at tape. Pollard is better than every safety on the roster except for Page and Morgan. Why did you get rid of Tank? Was it because he never played for the Patriots.

The truth is a time machine would not help because we are so deep in the sit pot that its best to look toward 2010 and 2011.

How can you position a team for success when you have no idea what the players are capable of? If we would have thrown money at free agents, cut current players, and then the players went off to be successful elsewhere, you would still be on here complaining. Big money free agents are not a guarentee to win. If it were, it would be a Raider/Redskins Super Bowl every year. Fans are obviously frustrated by the record, but come on, lets try to look to see what we can do instead of what was in the past. If Pioli sits on this team throughout all next offseason and starts next year the same way, then call for his head. As it goes right now, its way too soon.

Pioli was a late hire, and had to keep Herm for at least a week before dumping him. Haley at least a week+ later. The other thing to consider is Pioli's track record is NOT making big moves in the FA market - my guess is it will be the same way here. Get used to it.
You're 20/20 hindsight comments are mostly idiotic. With a team this young, I don't think bringing in vererans like Thomas, Vrable was a bad idea at all. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't - it's that way with EVERY team in the league. Expectations for new players/FAs are often fer too high on bad teams, so the misses are exacerbated. Thomas was cut anyway, he's irrelevant. Tank did nothing here but take up a roster spot and Pollard, aside from an occasional big hit, was inconsistent at best. Derrick Johnson may have all the talent in the world, but I haven't heard ANYONE say he's been living up to that talent consistently. Cassel was not a "horrible" mistake. Pioli ran a pass-oriented offense in NE, Haley was a OC for a pass-oriented team in AZ, did you really think they'd go with a QB who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from 15-yards away? Pioli knows Cassel, who has everything you want in your QB - but none of the surrounding talent - yet. Thigpen was not the long-term answer, they think Cassel is. Time will tell. For chrissake, get over Gonzales - he DIDN'T WANT TO BE HERE - he was BEGGING to leave, and doing it in the papers. How you can ignore or dismiss that is ridiculous. The guy HAD to go. It wasn't negotiable - the guy spent the prior year crying about getting out of KC. Because he's been good for the game, they gave him his wish, as dangerous a precedent as that sets.
Anyone who thought this team would undefeated 6 games in is sadly uninformed. Pioli will do what he's always done - rebuild the right way, from the ground up, but on a team this lacking in talent, he's signing anyone today who MIGHT be able to help now, which I agree with. LJ has been a nightmare, but maybe they are trying to correct that. Unfortunately these days, sometimes it's just not as simple as cutting a player. Who are you? Herm Edwards?

If you hire a new coach, you better get someone who can handle the job by adding expertise or coaching up current staff. You do not decide you do not need first string free agents. You do not draft kids who will not impact a team, immediately not in a few years. You do not only look at NE and MIA for replacement players. Pioli has done a piss poor job so far. Haley and his staff are a whole other story. Square pegs in round holes and very few of left over players have any skill and you sure do not want to waste time trying to use them even for one lousy year.

Ok football genius, who would you have hired as GM and head coach this past offseason? Even allowing you to look in hindsight, what better options were out there? Im guessing you would say Josh McDaniels as coach, but I would be curious to see what he would do taking over a 2-14 team that plays a brutal first half schedule compared to a 8-8 team that played a couple cupcakes to start the year. And since you arent a wait til next year guy, who would you hire right now or who would you sign that would lead us to the playoffs this year?
