Page inactive

Safety Jarrad Page joins Branden Albert among inactive Chiefs players today. Jon McGraw should get the start in place of Page, who has a sore shoulder.

Other Chiefs inactive players are tight ends Brad Cottam and Jake O'Connell, wide receiver Quinten Lawrence, cornerback Donald Washington and linebacker Pierre Walters. Matt Gutierrez is the third quarterback.

Chiefs add tackle to roster, release LB Rogers

The Chiefs made a late change to their 53-man roster today, adding tackle Barry Richardson from the practice squad and releasing linebacker Justin Rogers.

Richardson played in six games for the Chiefs a year ago. The move adds depth to a position where starter Branden Albert will miss Sunday's game with an ankle injury.

Albert didn't travel Saturday with the Chiefs to Washington, and he was

Here's a reason for some hope ...

While researching a story for Sunday's paper on the 0-5 Tennessee Titans, I realized I had forgotten this bit of history.

In 2006, the Titans also started 0-5. They went into Washington on Oct. 15 and won 25-22 for their first victory of the season.

The win triggered a turnaround as the Titans won seven of their next 10 and nearly became the first team in NFL history to overcome an 0-5 start and make the playoffs.

NFL Network's Q and A with Tony Gonzalez

Former Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez did a one-on-one interview with NFL Network’s Stacey Dales that will be aired on the NFL GameDay Morning pregame show this Sunday at 8 AM.

Here are some excerpts of the interview with the Gonzalez, a former Chiefs 10-time Pro Bowler.

_ On joining the Falcons after 12 years in Kansas City:

"It's like starting all over again. It’s like a I’m a rookie again, trying to prove myself to my teammates. A lot of these guys have maybe seen me play on television, but its different when you see (someone) in person. I wanted to make sure I left a really good impression on them. I was nervous the first day I went out to practice during the offseason."

Chiefs add linebacker

In a move aimed at least immediately at strengthening their special teams, the Chiefs signed linebacker Justin Rogers. They placed running back Jackie Battle on the injured-reserve list and coach Todd Haley said Battle would have surgery to repair a damaged shoulder.

Rogers was a sixth-round pick by the Patriots in 2007 but was released after training camp and picked up by the Cowboys. He played two seasons in Dallas and while he rarely got on the field on defense, he was among the team leaders in special teams tackles.

It's not just Jared Allen

That's bad enough for Chiefs fans to have to see Allen at the top of the NFC sack list with 6 1/2. But another familiar name, Tampa Bay's Jimmy Wilkerson, is second at 5.

The decision to allow Wilkerson to walk to Tampa as a free agent a couple of years ago was, in its own way, even more horrendous as the one to trade Allen to Minnesota. Wilkerson is as good a person and as hard a worker as anyone who ever walked through the Chiefs' locker room. Beyond that, he's a versatile defensive lineman who has pass rush skills. He came to the Chiefs as an underclassman who would take time to develop but the Chiefs evidently couldn't see the potential.

It's almost the middle of October. Too early to start thinking about the draft?

Things I believe:

- The Chiefs have made progress in their first five games, all of which have been losses (and some of them ugly).
- It will benefit the team for having played three terrific teams -- Baltimore, the Giants and Philadelphia -- early in the season, as disheartening as those losses were.
- Matt Cassel has at least some of the skills necessary to be Kansas City's quarterback of the future, at least based on one stunningly impressive drive at the end of regulation Sunday.

Washington's Zorn feels the heat

The wolves are hollering in Washington for embattled coach Jim Zorn, especially after Sunday's loss to previously winless Carolina.

The loss dropped Washington to 2-3 for the season, with victories over winless St. Louis and Tampa Bay.

And now, winless Kansas City comes to call this week.

"I want to win. That’s what I’m here for," Zorn told reporters on Monday. "That’s what the Redskins are all about. We’ve lost two tough games. I feel bad and I’m hurting. Our team is as well. These guys are guys with resolve. I’m a man of resolve and we’re going to get back at it, but it’s less than 24 hours after the game.”

Add a little salt to the wound

The NFL said today that Dallas wide receiver Miles Austin, who caught 10 passes for a team-record 250 yards and two touchdowns in the Cowboys’ 26-20 overtime victory over the Chiefs, became the 10th player in NFL history to record at least 10-250-2 in a game.

And he is the only one of those 10 so score the game-winning TD in overtime.

In addition to Austin, the Falcons' Roddy White had eight catches for a team-record 210 yards and two touchdowns in Atlanta's 45-10 win at San Francisco. That marked the second time in NFL history that two receivers each recorded at least 200 receiving yards and two TD catches on the same day _ the Chiefs' Stephone Paige and Houston’s Drew Hill on Dec. 22, 1985.
