LJ is gone, and his legacy in Kansas City is sealed

The Larry Johnson era is finished in Kansas City, and that means one of the most prolific runners in team history has his legacy: He will be remembered for his troubles and not his skills.

The Chiefs released Johnson on Monday morning, two weeks after he made disparaging comments that got him suspended two weeks. Johnson's suspension was scheduled to expire today.

But it seemed during those two weeks that, regardless of his suspension time table, he would never again wear a Chiefs uniform. It just seemed like too much of a stretch. Johnson became the face of poor judgment in Kansas City, and his last time wasn't his first time. He and Kansas City seemed a bad fit from the start, and Johnson complained and called out coaches and asked to be sent somewhere else for years.

Third quarter summary: Jaguars 17, Chiefs 6

Jac _ FG Scobee 27; 10 plays, 68 yards, 5:22 drive time, 0:47 remaining.

The Chiefs didn’t have a play for negative yardage in the first half but went backward on the first two snaps of the half, a sack and a pass in the flat to Mike Cox. Cassel completed a pass on third down to Chris Chambers couldn’t make up for all the lost yardage and the Chiefs punted . . . Garrard passed 18 yards to Holt on third and 10 to the Jacksonville 48. The Chiefs then held and the Jaguars punted . . . A screen pass to Dantrell Savage and a Charles run gave the Chiefs a first down but another negative play _ offensive pass interference on Dwayne Bowe _ killed the drive . . . The Chiefs again left Sims-Walker uncovered and he took a short pass 45 yards to the KC 26. That led to the field goal.

Kolby Smith entered the game for the first time and carried for two yards on the Chiefs’ first play. The Chiefs faced a fourth and one from the Jacksonville 48 but punted . . . After making the Jaguars go three plays and out on the game’s first possession, the Chiefs scored on their first possession for the first time of the season. Who will return punts?

That's an issue Todd Haley has to address before the start of the game. Bobby Wade had been handling that chore but he's inactive.

Warmups have started and Dantrell Savage and Maurice Leggett are in the two-player line catching Dustin Colquitt's punts.

I can't believe Haley would trust Leggett, who has had problems with fumbles and judgment so look for Savage to be the guy.

Lineup changes

The Chiefs announced some lineup changes for today's game. They're not bound by them. They can announce anything they want.

But they're saying that Andy Alleman will start in place of Mike Goff at right guard. Goff missed practice time this week because of a sore shoulder but he's well enough to be in uniform so perhaps this has more to do with performance than injury.

Branden Albert is scheduled to start at left tackle for the first time since the Dallas game. Mark Bradley is listed as the starter at wide receiver instead of the inactive Bobby Wade.

Wade this week's surprise inactive

Starting wide receiver Bobby Wade not only isn't starting today. He's not playing. The Chiefs are keeping five receivers active (Dwayne Bowe, Chris Chambers, Mark Bradley, Terrance Copper, Lance Long) but Wade is not among them.

Wade is second among the Chiefs with 20 catches and two TDs.

Also inactive for the Chiefs: tight ends Brad Cottam and Jake O'Connell, defensive backs Jon McGraw and Donald Washington, offensive linemen Ikechuku Ndukwe and linebacker Pierre walters. Matt Gutierrez is the third quarterback.

Kolby Smith activated, Engram out

To no one’s surprise, the Chiefs activated running back Kolby Smith off an injured list. Smith will play in tomorrow’s game against the Jaguars.

To make roster room, the Chiefs released wide receiver Bobby Engram.

Smith hasn’t played in a game since injuring his knee in a November game last year against Tampa Bay. But he could play a key role in tomorrow’s game.

The Chiefs will play for the first time this season without Larry Johnson, who is suspended. Jamaal Charles will also get work at running back and Dantrell Savage could also play.
